While her husband and children are away, Francesca is approached by Robert Kincaid, a photographer working for "National Geographic" magazine, who asks her for directions to do a photo report on the local bridges. Francesca agrees to accompany him on his visit. This innocent decision will completely change her life when she finds love again, albeit briefly. The pain caused by her separation from Robert, combined with the isolation she feels, leads Francesca to want to materialise her brief love affair in a diary. This memoir, spread over three volumes, is later found by her children, who are now questioning the purpose of her life.
