In 2023, 500 years will pass since the first performance of Gil Vicente's The Farce of Inês Pereira, in the convent of Tomar, before King João III. The play was written at the height of the author's dramaturgical production and was an attempt to respond to accusations of plagiarising foreign plays. The comic account of the misadventures of a middle-class Portuguese woman in the 16th century, who challenges family power and the medieval mentality that dominated 16th century society, would later be considered the most perfect of the works by the "founder of Portuguese theatre", thus dispelling doubts about his talent and originality.
Five centuries later, Pedro Penim rewrites the Vincentian original and transforms it into a work of our time. This show is the third in a trilogy dedicated to the family, which began with Pais & Filhos in 2021 and was followed by Casa Portuguesa in 2022. In the wake of these creations, A Farsa de Inês Pereira in 2023 takes a caustic look at some of the foundations of contemporary society, namely work, sexuality and the family unit.
