The year is 1971. António (Miguel Nunes), 28, joins the Portuguese army to serve as a doctor in one of the worst areas of the Colonial War, in eastern Angola. Far from Maria José (Margarida Vila-Nova), the beloved woman he was forced to leave, he kills his homesickness through the long letters he writes to her over the course of two years. Through them, the viewer gets to know the lonely man behind the soldier, his anxieties, desires and hopes. Over time, António falls in love with Africa and takes political positions. A dramatic film written and directed in 2016 by Ivo M. Ferreira (Águas Mil, Hotel Império), based on a screenplay by him and Edgar Medina, inspired by "D'Este Viver Aqui Neste Papel Descripto: Cartas da Guerra", a compilation of letters that António Lobo Antunes (at the time a young ensign deployed to Angola) wrote to his wife.
