"The Woman in 19th century Minho: the case of Ana Plácido" is the theme of the next conference of the cycle "Minho Stories - Narratives in the Feminine of an Identitary Geography", which will take place on Saturday, November 20, at 16h00, in the auditorium of Casa de Camilo, in São Miguel de Seide.
The conference cycle that started in early 2020 is organised by the Minho Innovation Consortium, which integrates the three Intermunicipal Communities of Alto Minho, Cávado and Ave, and was created under the anchor project "PA2. Touring Cultural - Cultural Identity of Minho", co-financed by the North 2020 Programme.
This Cycle of Conferences, which is touring the 24 municipalities of Minho, aims to enhance an innovative look on the cultural heritage of Minho remembered in the feminine, as a society with a strong matriarchal tradition, providing a narrative that brings together knowledge and identity values that must be studied, known, cared for, preserved, valued and disseminated. For the realisation of the conferences, academic personalities with relevant research work in the subject under analysis are invited: "Cultural Identity of Minho". Besides providing the participants with the contents on the proposed themes, the organisation
intends to promote an experience of identity of the territory, through the dynamisation of a cultural moment linked to each of the conferences.
The Famalicão conference will be held by Irene Maria de Montezuma de Carvalho Mendes Vaquinhas, Full Professor of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, and will be entitled "Women in the family and society in the 19th century". Taking Ana Augusta Plácido as a point of reflection, the leading specialist in the History of Private Life in Portugal will focus on the role of women in 19th-century Minho, both in terms of power and affection relations within the family, and in terms of how women could or should behave in society according to the standards, especially moral standards, of the time.
This session will include two other interventions. The first one will be given by Luciene Marie Pavanelo, from the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Brazil, who will speak about "The "real" woman from Minho versus the "damsels from the romances": the portrait of Tomásia, by Camilo Castelo Branco", with the intention of presenting a positive image of Tomásia, as a strong woman, in opposition to the romantic imaginary of Silvestre. The second, by João Paulo Braga, Researcher at the Centre for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies at the Portuguese Catholic University, will focus on the poetry that Camilo Castelo Branco dedicated to Ana Plácido and that inspired musicians to compose relevant musical passages. The Director of Casa de Camilo and Centro de Estudos Camilianos, José Manuel de Oliveira, will moderate the session.
During the activity, two musical moments will take place, under the responsibility of Rui Mesquita, where 19th century compositions will be interpreted, and the text "Ana Plácido in São Miguel de Seide", written by the writer A. M. Pires Cabral, will be performed by the actress Ana Paula Borges Pinto.
The participation in this event, either in person or through Facebook of Casa de Camilo, is free of charge, but requires prior registration. Those interested may do so through the telephone number 252.309.750 or through the email address geral@camilocastelobranco.org
