1920s. Brothers Phil and George Burbank own a large ranch situated in Montana (USA). Phil is a deliberately rough, provocative and sometimes cruel "cowboy". George, on the other hand, is a gentle and conciliatory man who strives to maintain harmony. One day, tired of loneliness, George asks Rose, a widow who runs a small restaurant with her son, Peter, a shy, insecure teenager, for her hand. Phil, who considers his brother's marriage a personal affront and who doesn't take kindly to those two strangers moving into his house, doesn't miss an opportunity to torment and oppress them. Written by New Zealander Jane Campion ("The Piano", "In the Cut", "Bright Star"), this western adapts the novel of the same name written in 1967 by American Thomas Savage (1915-2003). Winner of the Silver Lion at the 78th Venice Film Festival, "Power of the Dog" was nominated for 12 Oscars.
