In May 2021, Access to Culture organised a seminar with the Happy Museum Project | Common Cause Foundation entitled "Values for stronger communities". One of the first exercises was for each trainee to choose the three values that were most important to them from a long list. They were then asked to think about their workplaces and to what extent their values were recognised and respected in their jobs. The fact that only one trainee answered 'yes', made evident the great gap that often exists between who we are as individuals and who we are in our professional context (or what we are allowed to be). It also became clear that, as there is a greater demand from society and from cultural professionals for the ethical conduct of cultural organisations, it is very necessary for them to reflect on their values and to communicate them publicly.
What are the values of each cultural organisation? Why should they be defined and assumed? How are they expressed? And, above all, in what ways do cultural organisations identify, cultivate and transmit values that are important to the communities in which they operate?
