More than 700 famalicenses, from 21 associations of our municipality, will spread the flower scent through the urban centre of Famalicão. The Battle of Flowers, one of the ex-libris of the Festa de Maio - Flores & Trocas, happens next Sunday, May 8, from 15h30, crowning the main arteries of the city centre with all the beauty, perfume and splendour of the flowers.
The Festa de Maio is a cultural initiative that brings together two great traditions with distinct roots: the Battle of the Flowers and the Exchange Fair, also known as the Feira Grande de Maio (“Big May Fair”), which takes place at the weekly market, next Sunday, from 7h00.
The Exchange Fair, ordered by King D. Sancho I in 1205, also known as the Donkey Fair, recreates some of the greatest historical traditions of the municipality, such as the cattle exhibition, the sausage market, with the popular taverns and the green wine in the bowls, among other moments. In turn, the Flower Festival has as its maximum exponent the Battle of Flowers whose first edition took place in 2011.
It should be noted that from 6 to 8 of May, the Flower Fair also takes place in Praça D. Maria II, as well as, close by, a fair dedicated to local products and gastronomy, with handicrafts, traditional sweets, snacks, horticultural products, among others. In parallel, there are musical events taking place in the tent at the back of the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation, as well as a parade through the main squares of the city centre, and workshops and artistic ateliers at 9 de Abril square, throughout the three days of the May Festival.
