Autumn 1989. Just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Alex's mother has a heart attack and falls into a coma. The triumph of capitalism takes place while she is unconscious. When she finally wakes up in the summer of 1990, the GDR has ceased to exist and Berlin is totally transformed. Alex, determined to protect her at any cost and afraid she would have a heart attack again if she knew what had happened, decides not to tell her that the Wall has fallen. With the help of a friend, he manufactures TV programmes that no longer exist, prevents her from seeing commercials (what would it be like if she saw a Coca-Cola poster!) and fills her house with products and objects, increasingly rare and hard to get hold of.
