Vila Nova de Famalicão, like the great Carnival celebrations in the country, will not be holding its big Carnival night. This is one of the largest carnival events in the country, which every year, on the night from Monday to Tuesday of Carnival, attracts thousands of revellers to the city, will not be held in 2022, by decision of the famalicense autarchy, supported by the opinions of health entities in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Mayor, Mário Passos, speaks of a decision that "leaves some sorrow, because, once again, one of the great tourist attractions of Vila Nova de Famalicão will not be held, but the decision is absolutely necessary for the protection of people's health".
It should be noted that the Carnival of Famalicão has always been affirmed as unique and genuine, born of the spontaneous participation of the population. The event, which began in the 1980s with a group of revellers from Famalicão, never stopped growing and became a national phenomenon. The bars and cafés joined the party with their DJ's and the famalicense municipality always gave all the logistic and decorative support, dressing the streets properly and promoting a musical programme.
2022 will be the second time that the Carnival night will be cancelled after more than 40 years of genuine revelry.
