Site formally designated as Animal Pickup Centre was inaugurated this Monday
"What's coming is not a kennel, it's more than what's formally called a collection centre, and it’s genuinely a tool at the service of municipal animal protection policy." This is how the Mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Paulo Cunha, inaugurated, on Monday, the construction works of the new Official Animal Pickup Centre of Famalicão.
"What will rise here is an important and a pioneering work, it is an animal protection centre, different from the existing kennels, which is not limited to the physical building, but follows a whole dynamic of awareness, welcome, responsibility and animal dedication", said Paulo Cunha.
The work involves a total investment of more than half a million euros, was awarded to the company Fernando Silva & Cª, Lda. in addition, has an execution period of 450 days.
According to the mayor, this work meets public policies for the protection of animals, "a clear bet of the municipality" that since the beginning of this mandate devotes a portfolio to the Animal Protection. "The City Council does not exhaust in itself the perimeter to be done in this sector, there is volunteering, there is civic duty and there are informal groups, associations and even citizens in this sector with exemplary performance in this matter", he added.
As a reminder, the Official Animal Pickup Centre of Famalicão will be built next to the current facilities of the Municipal Kennel, in an area of about 5500 square meters.
It will be a quality equipment that will provide the municipality with a space for the reception and treatment of stray animals. It will be equipped with about 80 boxes for dogs, 45 for cats and 4 for other species.
Improving the health objectives, controlling diseases, improving animal welfare and safety of the population, improving working conditions and the functionality of the existing space are concerns that underlie the construction of this new equipment.
The CROA will be equipped with all the conditions for the fulfilment of its objectives and the legal requirements and obligations inherent to such equipment. Among other features, the space will be divided into facilities by species (kennel, cattery and other species), individual and group facilities, quarantine and litter cells, infirmary, warehouses, veterinary office, disinfection zone and recreation and physical activity area for dogs and cats.
