After having been present at the Portugal Smart Cities Summit held this week at FIL - Parque das Nações, the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão will host between 2 and 4 December the oldest event in Portugal dedicated to smart cities - Smart Travel 2021.
As a result of the pandemic, the event went completely digital in 2020, but this year it returns in a hybrid model divided by two stages in the county of Famalicão, including Casa de Camilo, in S. Miguel de Seide.
New big names of smart cities in Europe and in the world will participate in the event, such as Carles Augusti I Hernandez, Rhonda Binda, Barry Rogers, Xabier Arruza, Huang Cui, Pedro Neves, Scott Shepard, Carolina Tkachuk, Luis Rato, Margarida Campolargo, among others.
Smart Travel is increasingly a Festival of Intelligence with trips around the world discovering best practices, but also innovations and creative aspects of urbanism and tourism, especially dedicated to small and medium-sized cities. Therefore, also in focus will be topics related to gastronomy, ecotourism, local products and sustainability with a panel that will include among others the Michelin Chef Óscar Geadas (Restaurant G), Luís Rato (National Association of Street Food) with moderation by Journalist Luís Costa Branco.
This year, cities such as Dublin, Bilbao, Hainan, Rome, Barcelona, New York, among others, will be in the spotlight. In Portugal, in addition to Famalicão, the cities of Oeiras, Vizela, Porto and Bragança will be highlighted, which is the city where the event was born in 2014 and where it will return next year.
Those interested can consult the programme atwww.smartravel.pt and register for free for the event, which will be broadcast via web. Attendance in person is limited, due to the pandemic situation.
It should be noted that Famalicão has been strongly committed to the development of its Smart City platform "Famalicão B Smart". Since 2019, the city has been working on the aggregation of information, with priority for the municipality's internal management indicators, which "later end up also being external", as Vítor Moreira, the project manager, explains. This is a work that reaches "everyone within the municipality", in a transversal approach, he says, clarifying that the municipality's intention to become a smart city involves working "horizontally" and not focusing only on certain verticals. Becoming, in 2021, the host city of one of the most important international smart cities and smart tourism events will be another boost to put Famalicão on the radar of good examples of urban intelligence policies, with sustainable development strategies for the future.
