Baby Box. Famalicense Startup wants to promote safe sleep practices for babies with new concept in Portugal
01-06-2020
After six years in England, Verónica Macedo and João Cortinhas decided to go back to Portugal when they knew they were going to be parents. With them, they brought an idea that they knew in that country and that they turned into business, encouraged by the fear of seeing something similar in the Portuguese market and then thinking: "Why didn't we do it?
It is called Baby Box, which is a cardboard box that aims to promote safer sleeping practices for babies in order to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. It can be purchased from this Monday, June 1st, World Children's Day, on the famalicense startup site Baby Box.
The concept was born in Finland in the 1930s, and is also present in other countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, but is still unknown in our country. "Baby Box is a certified and very comfortable cardboard box, specially designed to fit inside cribs and cot beds, although it can also be transported anywhere in the house, almost like a nest," explains the 32-year-old nurse.
By its measurements (68 centimetres long by 42 centimetres wide), the Baby Box reduces the tendency to put objects, soft toys and pillows in the crib, a practice that can potentiate deaths by asphyxiation.
João, 34 years old, sees the box as "a means to an end, functioning as an educational object for adults. Isolated, it arouses a certain "strangeness", but allied to education, "one feels a completely different openness" on the part of the Portuguese parents, underlines the person responsible for the operations and marketing of the brand.
In addition to the box itself, which can hold up to ten kilograms, the Baby Box also includes an adjustable mattress, a waterproof cover and a 100% cotton sheet.
It can be purchased for 34.95 euros, from this Monday 1st June, the date they start accepting orders. The value already includes shipping costs and the brand sends to any point in mainland Portugal (the islands will be soon, guarantee Verónica and João).
Followed by Famalicão Made IN, through its Enterprise Support Office, the Baby Box startup is installed in the Incubator Famalicão Made IN - Polo Edifício Globus, in Vilarinho das Cambas, Famalicão. Selling in stores with door to the street is also on the horizon, but for now, the couple gives priority to the site (www.babybox.pt).
